One of the worst designed camera I've ever had - I had to return it.1
Having owned several Olympus digital cameras and also used Nikon, Sony & Canon cameras, using this Samsung was an awful experience. It has so many odd features you have to wonder if anyone on their design team ever thought to try out their competition's cameras. Here are the problems I have with this camera.

    1. Wrist Strap. For starters the wrist strap holder is a little metal bar that sticks out from the camera into your right hand when using the camera. Every other camera I've owned has it recessed so you don't feel it. At least they should have made it easy to remove so that it doesn't stick into your hand.

    2. Batteries. Figuring out how to get the battery in was annoying. I've never had to look at the directions to put a battery in any of the hundreds of battery-operated devices we own. The description said this camera uses AA batteries - it does not. And I could not find anywhere to buy a spare battery. I gave this camera a try only because I thought it would run on AAs and I need to have spares with me because I use my camera to photograh my work in client homes.

    3. Touch screen. At first I this was a neat idea. In reality, you have to use a STYLUS PEN to operate it!!! I tried using my finger nails but it did operate properly. When I'm taking pictures the last thing I want to do is worry about finding the stylus pen and hold on it. There isn't even a place in the camera to stick the pen like Palm pilots & Treos have.

    4. Transfering Photos to PC. It took about a half hour before we finally got to actually take pictures with. I've never had to look at an instruction book for a camera to get to the point of taking the first picture. Once we finally did get some taken getting to the PC was a pain in the neck. My husband is a computer engineer and he had trouble! Turns out you can't move the pix directly to your computer with a USB cable from the camera's memory like you can with every other camera out there. You can't even do it from the disk. You have to install their software and use their software to make the transfer!! They plaster the camera instructions with warnings that you will lose your photos if you don't use their software. This is ridiculous. You should be able to easily & quickly transfer the photos to ANY PC anywhere with that disk. Even worse, you have to transfer the photos from camera memory to the disk, then you can move it to your computer.

    5. Picture Quality. As dumb as all these design errors are, I might have lived with it and not returned the camera if the picture quality were at least as good as my 200$ Olympus. The photos all had a kind of dark and grainy or fuzzy quality to them that I'm just not used to. Kind of like how printed photos taken with ISO 400 or 800 film look. I use photos of my work on my website (see www.neatandsimple.com) and in e-books. The pictures dont' have to be perfect, but they need to at least look good enough to see the work clearly. That's means I need a camera that takes good indoor shots. The wide angle lens feature is awesome, but there are a lot more choices out there as of October 1, 2007. Olympus Olympus Stylus FE-290 7MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Black)just came out with theirs at about the same price so I'm going to try that one.

Very good wide-angle digicam effort from Samsung3
I wish more attention would be given to the still relatively few digicams that have true wide-angle lenses. This is a much better effort from Samsung on a wide-angle zoom digicam. I previously had the A55W, which had severe limitations and useability issues. I also have the 6-megapixel Panasonic FX01, an excellent wide-angle digicam, which does have more noticeable image noise than this Samsung but still outshines it in some areas.
The Samsung has a very nice build feel and is much faster than the A55W overall. The A55W had a terrible long preflash delay for all flash shots that could not be turned off. The L74 Wide is much speeder in this regard, though I suspect face detection slows the autofocus time a bit, and if you turn on red-eye reduction while shooting, it adds processing time after the photo is taken (as does the ASR shake-reduction feature, since the antishake is done in post-processing in camera). The movie mode allows for very long shoot time, and does allow zooming while recording, but the sound is muted during the actual zooming of the lens, so this will introduce brief passages of complete silence into the video any time you zoom.
The touch screen works reasonably well and is probably no more fiddly than some multi-button setups.
I wish there were an external charger for the battery so it wouldn't have to charge in camera, which would make carrying an extra battery more convenient.
Picture quality overall (at maximum size and jpg quality) is very good, still looking like a small-sensor digicam as opposed to a DSLR or larger-sensor camera, but noise is well controlled in most Auto ISO situations. Flash exposures are also well exposed and don't suffer from overexposure with close subjects.
The World Tour Guide function is quite a gimmick but fun to play with, though I have found a quirk where it only works if you remove the SD card from the camera. It seems the camera will only recognize one "disk" at a time, so if an SD card is in the camera, the World Tour Guide program will start, but the buttons for countries are inactive. If I remove the SD card, the camera will use the internal memory for photos and the World Tour Guide will then work. Samsung did not respond to my customer-service e-mail. I assume a firmware upgrade/fix would resolve this. Any hints from anyone who has used the camera?

    need the remote badly4
I use this camera for Paragliding and shoot pics back at customers who go tandem with me. So the remote is a key accessory for me. however, it is not available yet. if anyone has an idea of how to obtain one of these remotes please let me know, the camera is really quite challenging without the remote. it would be very nice if you could "set" remote and not go back to the default every time its powered off.
The wide angle is great, as is the bottomless video function.
please let me know about the remote, thanks... Drew

1/2.7" 3.2 Megapixel Effective Super HAD CCD
Super HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD's provide excellent image quality by allowing more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. QXGA (2048 x 1536) image size with its high resolution CCD, the DSC-P8 captures in 4 different image sizes, with Fine or Standard JPEG compression.

    3X Optical Zoom Lens
To help frame your shots for better digital pictures. Optical Zoom helps you bring distant subjects closer & pull back for wide shots.

0 - 3.2X Smart Zoom (at VGA Size)
Smart Zoom intelligently uses the full CCD to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size--thus avoiding the image degradation of Digital Zooms.

    3 Area Multi-Point Auto Focus
Evaluating 3 separate focus areas of the frame, Multi-Point AF can intelligently focus on the subject and avoid mistakenly focusing on the background. To maintain accurate focus lock with fast moving subjects, Continuous AF keeps focusing until the moment of exposure.

Good basic camera, especially for the younger set4
I wanted to get my pre-teen daughter a digital camera as a gift, so I didn't want anything complex, and I didn't want to spend a lot of money.

I am very familiar with Canon cameras, so my natural tendency was to go for another Canon. After some research, I settled on the PowerShot A460.

I think it was a good choice, as it takes good quality photos in the auto mode, has a decent zoom range, and seems to have a durable construction that should last her a long time. While it's not tiny, its small size means that she can carry it around without a case.

You're going to need a memory card, and I would recommend at least a 2GB card to take a decent amount of photos before needing to empty it, but 4GB would probably be the best for most people.

This is a camera without a lot of complicated controls for those with basic to mid-level snapshot needs. To get more, you're going to have to pay more, but that's the nice thing about Canon's line of cameras; there is a model out there for just about every need.

    Definitely recommended!

    Customer Reviews

    Extremely impressive pocket camera5
I am *extremely* impressed by this little Leica.

This will be a rather short review since this camera model is already, like, 300 years old in dog years.

I was able to pick a new one up for less than [...] on the internets from someone who clearly didn't know what they were parting with. When I inquired into why the party was selling she only told me that her husband needed something newer.

I have owned and used dozens of cameras (Leica, Nikon, Canon, Rollie, Mamiya) in my career.

The C-LUX 2 is an amazing unit in terms of color authenticity, image quality, zoom quality, sensitivity, precision, workmanship, and most of all: usability and convenience.

I cannot stress how perfect the menu system is on this camera. It's perfect and the controls are precise, accurate, and delightful to use.

Convenience means that having this camera in your pocket you will never miss a great shot no matter where you are. Yes it really is that good. With controls from scene mode to nearly manual you have precise control of your pictures. There is no reason you cannot achieve a National Geo picture with this camera.

When the C-LUX 2 debuted at [.........] it was really a Euro-jet-setting no-show. Now that you can find this gem below [....] it is a must have.

5 stars based on current market conditions and availability in late 2008. Good luck finding a mint unit. If you are indefatigable you will find no better camera in the same class at any price.

    Excitment turns to "meh".3
I was hoping to find something different. Something better than the rest. Sometimes you just don't feel like the usual selection is good enough. I already had a Canon, everyone and their brother had a Nikon.
I was thinking about the slim line Casio, but who wants to buy a Casio?
So one late night / early morning I found this Leica. It looked different than the Canon/Nikon/Casio/Olympus and plus it had that little red badge on the front. I had to have it.
I found a local dealer on the Leica website and the next day I bought it for the same price as Amazon.
BTW, I knew there was a Panasonic version for half the price. I bought into the cosmetic of the Leica, the story, and that little red badge.
Supposedly this model has different firmware than the Panasonic which gives your JPEG files a color palette similar to classic Leica cameras.
It does not shoot in RAW.

    Design

The look of this camera is gorgeous. It is very understated but an instant classic design. The build quality is also very good. It doesn't attract unwanted attention but once you put your hands on it you know it is a well built product.

    Ease Of Use

The button layout is nice. It is simple and clean with access to shortcuts for flash, exposure, self timer, and review.
Choosing auto settings or manual mode is easy and the icons make sense.
I wish there were shortcuts for shutter speed and ISO settings. To access those you have to get into the menu which is time consuming and cumbersome. PS most cameras are like that though.

    Ergonomics

It is so small and thin that it is kind of hard to hold steadily. Definitely use the wrist strap because it has slipped out of my hands a few times.

    Picture Quality

This is very subjective. With good lighting I love the way my pictures turn out. Colors are very natural and not over saturated at all. It is very hard to get "tac sharp" shots with it but I don't think that is the point of a point and shoot.
With average or difficult lighting this point and shoot really struggles. I hate using high ISO settings because anything over 400 has a lot of noise of this camera. The flash blows out the picture if you are less then 6 feet away. It isn't powerful enough in a dim room if you are more then 8 feet away. There are no controls to dial down the flash. To get a good picture with or without flash you spend a lot of time changing exposure, ISO, and shutter speed. There is a +/- 2 exposure control but the shutter speed can only be set to a maximum of 1 second in manual mode. ISO can be set from 100-1250 but again anything over 400 has a lot of noise. Using "simple mode" usually jacks up the ISO settings in dark rooms or uses the flash which is useless most of the time. You can get a good shot in a dark room or outdoors but it will take some time to set it up.

    Extra

Includes a copy of Photoshop Elements which is a fun program to add effects to your photos.

    Overall

If you are thinking about this for outdoor day trips to the beach or mountains then this might be a good choice for you. If you want something to take to parties and nights out with your friends then you need to find something with better low light performance and a smarter auto mode. I don't regret buying it but it is not all that I hoped for considering Leica's reputation and premium price.

    Uh oh3
I got this camera new and within the first day of use an issue came up. The mechanism to cover/uncover the lens was faulty. When I turn the camera the lens come out but remains covered. Sometimes it just opens halfway. I don't know if other owners have experienced the same problems, but considering how delicate is this mechanism, I imagine is a problem with the model in general. The area around the lens scratches easily, so consider it a warning if you're going to put this camera in your pocket. I wouldn't blame you because it's the perfect pocket size, but it's also a pricey camera. I'm not crazy about picture quality but could be because I have a far superior digital SLR. There's some (barely noticeable) distortion in the images which I attribute to lens size.

    From the Manufacturer
Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, today releases the PowerShot range-opening 3.2-megapixel PowerShot A410. Replacing the popular PowerShot A400, the PowerShot A410 has a bold new design and incorporates improved operability and performance through DIGIC II processing, and a 3.2x optical zoom with maximum aperture of f2.8-f5.1. It is housed in a smaller, more compact and robust body.

Featuring 5-point AiAF auto focus and a range of shooting modes, the A410's ease of use makes it the ideal camera for those making the change to digital.

    DIGIC II power
In a leap up from the PowerShot A400, the PowerShot A410 now includes Canon's renowned DIGIC II processing--the same technology found in Canon's EOS-1 professional range digital SLR cameras. The DIGIC II processor integrates all image processing algorithms onto a single chip to deliver fast write times, minimal shutter lag, optimal image definition and consistently precise and natural color reproduction. Camera start up and response times for image review are significantly improved. Introduction of DIGIC II also accounts for an up to 40% improvement in auto focus times, and smooth continuous shooting at a highly impressive 2.5 frames per second.

    Simply better
While being smaller and more robust, the A410 has a longer optical zoom of 3.2 x (41-131mm equivalent) allowing the user extra reach. The increased maximum aperture provides more options when shooting in low light. 5-point AiAF auto focus analyses the composition of the shot and focuses the camera accordingly, keeping even off-center subjects sharply in focus. Super Macro mode allows focus on subjects as close as 1.5 centimeters from the lens.

Users can take photographs using the optical viewfinder or the 1.5-inch LCD monitor. The monitor is adjustable up to 15 levels of brightness, and the user interface has been improved to make the camera even more simple to use. 22 language settings can be displayed.

To take full advantage of the camera's zoom range, the A410's flash has been repositioned, ensuring that there are no dark shadows in images when they are recorded with the lens fully extended. The flash covers a range of up to 3 meters.

    Camera modes
The A410 has 14 shooting modes to select from, including 8 pre-set Special Scene modes to help achieve great results in tricky lighting conditions. These modes include Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids and Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Beach, Snow, and Fireworks. To assist photographers with composition, a gridline display can be selected, which helps with framing shots and keeping horizons level. The addition of My Colors allows the operator to use enhanced, in-camera digital effects, such as Color Swap, while shooting. Previously, this level of image enhancement was only possible after downloading to a PC, and using specialised software.

The A410 also allows users to capture high quality movie clips. It supports VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA (320 x 240) quality at 10 and 20 frames per second respectively. Up to 3 minutes of footage can be captured. A Compact Mode is provided for producing clips suitable for e-mail without the problem of unwieldy file sizes.

    Direct printing
At 3.2 megapixels, the A410 can print photo quality images up to A4 size. When used in combination with Canon's new Compact Photo Printer Selphy CP510 and Canon's Ink and Paper Set (KP-108IP), prints can be produced very inexpensively. Printing via Selphy CP Compact Photo Printers also allows the user to print handy ID Photo prints and movie prints.

When connected to the latest range of PictBridge compatible PIXMA printers, image enhancement is possible with functions including Noise Reduction and Vivid Photo as well as the new Face Brightener feature.

Printing of images without having to connect to a PC is also made simpler via the Print/Share button.

    Comprehensive software
The A410 comes bundled with the following Canon software:

  • ZoomBrowser EX 5.5, PhotoRecord 2.2 (Windows), ImageBrowser 5.5 (Macintosh): For easy image download, storage and retrieval, as well as management of image layout and printing.
  • PhotoStitch 3.1: Creates stunning panoramas and can be used with Windows and Macintosh.
  • PhotoStudio: The photo manipulation software by ArcSoft.

Purchasers of the A410 are eligible for membership of Canon iMAGE Gateway , where they can upload images and customise their camera settings.

The bundled software supports Windows 98 (SE), ME, 2000 (SP4), XP (SP1/3) and Macintosh OS X v10.2-v10.3. The A410 supports PTP for driverless transfer to supported Windows XP or Macintosh OS X.

    What's in the box
PowerShot A410 body, two AA-size Alkaline batteries, 16 MB MultiMediaCard MMC-16M, wrist strap WS-800, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM, USB interface cable IFC-400PCU

    3 Year Old Camera; Review5
I've had this camera for 3 years now. I use AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries. Never a problem with the camera or the batteries (I got the Sony brand that comes with the charger). You'll probably need to buy batteries, a larger memory card, and perhaps a case. This camera will not take SD cards that are "HC" (high capacity). Those cards are usually 4GB and higher.

Picture resolutions this camera can capture:
    2048 x 1536
    1600 x 1200
    1024 x 768
    640 x 480

There are 3 Modes you can enable, 1) Superfine, 2) Fine, and 3) Normal. These settings change the JPEG compression. Superfine has little to no compression. And Normal will have the most compression. If you lower the setting to "Normal", you can decrease the file sizes and fit more pictures on your SD card and take more pictures.

This camera will show you the amount of pictures you can take at a particular setting. For example, with a 512MB SD card, at the highest resolution of 2048x1536 and set at "Superfine", it will take 302 pictures. At 2048x1536, and set at "Normal" it will take 1066 pictures. If you have used up half your card disk space, it will account for that and display the amount of pictures you can take.

It can capture movies/videos. They will not have sound though. Below are the dimensions:
    640 x 480 at 10 FPS
    320 x 240 at 20 FPS
    FPS = Frames Per Second

The 320x240 videos look good and run a lot smoother because of the higher frames per second.

Also has common features like Macro, Supermacro, indoor/outdoor settings, etc.

I'll never buy another digital camera till this one breaks down. I use to think the megapixels of the camera meant it would take better pictures. However, that is incorrect. That only means it will take higher resolution pictures, which doesn't necessarily mean better pictures. If you do a lot of printing or print larger than 8.5 x 11, then megapixels would matter. I stopped caring about that since I rather have a camera just take quality pictures. If I were printing posters or something, I'd care.

It is fairly simply to use.

    Just Right5
I got this camera in 2005 and it is now 2008 and it has been everywhere with me! We've gone skiing, went to Niagara falls (this camera survived maid of the mist boat ride), several zoos, conventions, graduations, microbiology laboratory ect. This thing has stayed working in all sorts of weather after much tumbling around in my handbag. I take it to school and work every day. I've never had any problems with it - ever. The menus and functions are user-friendly. The flash is just right (not harsh) and never makes my face look shiny like so many other cameras do. The zoom is awesome and the self-timer can be custom set in many ways!

Tip: use rechargeable batteries rather than regular. This camera went through my AAs very quickly during long events (half day and full day events called for at least one battery change). Now, with the $20 rechargeable 2500mAh batteries, I only run out of power every few months no matter how many or long my photo-ops last! It's been great!

One question, though. Why is there a video feature if the camera cannot record audio (sound)??? I never use the video feature because of this.

This camera takes great pictures, is durable, and is my best friend. Thank you Canon!

    Excellent entry camera4
More than excellent image quality for recreational use. I used it on my trips and gotten very satisfactory results, but blurry and grainy in most night shots, like most cameras. Colors become more vivid than real life. Printouts made w/ ip1500 inkjet is good but slightly grainier than film. Navigation is fast and super easy. Features I find useful: Adjustable gamma, brightness, several fun color tweaks, selectable light tones, macro/super macro, auto/manual flash, rapid shots, 5/10sec timer, panorama, LCD screen on/off, tripod mount, auto standby.

The deal breakers: If priced at $100 and over, I'd spend 50 more for new models like one with higher resolution, lithium battery, and a flatter profile (not for looks, but for the placement of the trigger). Picture can be grainy even in warmly lit living rooms, but that's a problem w/ all camera even w/ some SLRs. Just use flash(but drains power to ~15 shots).

    Lovely camera for kids3
this is lively camera for kids , but the screen is too small , and the resolution of the screen is really bad , but my daughter love it ..

    Absolutely, positively garbage!1
I purchased this camera for my 7-year-old Daughter. It looks like a cute little camera but the pictures that it takes are horrible. They are so blurry and so dark that you can hardly see anything. The camera doesn't have any type of flash and it is badly needed. We even tried taking pictures in very bright light and the pictures still look like they were taken outside at midnight without a flash. I don't leave 1 star reviews very often but I feel this camera is very deserving of it.

    Not worth it2
Picture quality is horrible and that's with decent light. Forget anything darker than a very bright room.
The overlay thing can be kind of fun for the kids but the almost indistinguishable photo part will keep it from lasting.
It's fairly sturdy, more than a standard camera anyway.
You're better off getting a used 1 or 2 megapixel camera at the same price.

For some reason I can't give this thing less than 2 stars. It really only gets a 1 from me.

I purchased this item as a gift and have not had any complaints. I believe the recipient of this gift is satisfied and I know he has used it frequently.

Kodak Easy Share C633 6.1 MP Digital Camera1
This camera is not worth what it sells for. I got it for a Christmas gift with the docking station only 2 years ago, and it's shot. The first thing that I noticed with the camera is the shutter got stuck, 1/4 to 1/2 way open, not good. Had to pry it open manually. Next, the camera sucked batteries like there was no tomorrow, sort of like the big oil execs. sucked our money when gas was nearly $5.00 a gallon. The 3rd, and final thing that happened to the camera is the screen went out. How can you take pictures if you don't have any screen? Junk, Junk, Junk, probably made in China with lead too....

    I hate this camera2
This is the worst camera I ever used. I am so disappointed with it. The pictures are not that great. Never take a closeup with this camera, unless you like blurry pictures (even when you use the setting for close pictures) The lighting conditions have to be perfect to get a good picture off this camera - i.e. a bright sunny day.. otherwise expect to be disappointed. And indoor photos...forget it... and buy LOTS of batteries... this thing eats them like crazy!
