One of the worst designed camera I've ever had - I had to return it.1
Having owned several Olympus digital cameras and also used Nikon, Sony & Canon cameras, using this Samsung was an awful experience. It has so many odd features you have to wonder if anyone on their design team ever thought to try out their competition's cameras. Here are the problems I have with this camera.

    1. Wrist Strap. For starters the wrist strap holder is a little metal bar that sticks out from the camera into your right hand when using the camera. Every other camera I've owned has it recessed so you don't feel it. At least they should have made it easy to remove so that it doesn't stick into your hand.

    2. Batteries. Figuring out how to get the battery in was annoying. I've never had to look at the directions to put a battery in any of the hundreds of battery-operated devices we own. The description said this camera uses AA batteries - it does not. And I could not find anywhere to buy a spare battery. I gave this camera a try only because I thought it would run on AAs and I need to have spares with me because I use my camera to photograh my work in client homes.

    3. Touch screen. At first I this was a neat idea. In reality, you have to use a STYLUS PEN to operate it!!! I tried using my finger nails but it did operate properly. When I'm taking pictures the last thing I want to do is worry about finding the stylus pen and hold on it. There isn't even a place in the camera to stick the pen like Palm pilots & Treos have.

    4. Transfering Photos to PC. It took about a half hour before we finally got to actually take pictures with. I've never had to look at an instruction book for a camera to get to the point of taking the first picture. Once we finally did get some taken getting to the PC was a pain in the neck. My husband is a computer engineer and he had trouble! Turns out you can't move the pix directly to your computer with a USB cable from the camera's memory like you can with every other camera out there. You can't even do it from the disk. You have to install their software and use their software to make the transfer!! They plaster the camera instructions with warnings that you will lose your photos if you don't use their software. This is ridiculous. You should be able to easily & quickly transfer the photos to ANY PC anywhere with that disk. Even worse, you have to transfer the photos from camera memory to the disk, then you can move it to your computer.

    5. Picture Quality. As dumb as all these design errors are, I might have lived with it and not returned the camera if the picture quality were at least as good as my 200$ Olympus. The photos all had a kind of dark and grainy or fuzzy quality to them that I'm just not used to. Kind of like how printed photos taken with ISO 400 or 800 film look. I use photos of my work on my website (see www.neatandsimple.com) and in e-books. The pictures dont' have to be perfect, but they need to at least look good enough to see the work clearly. That's means I need a camera that takes good indoor shots. The wide angle lens feature is awesome, but there are a lot more choices out there as of October 1, 2007. Olympus Olympus Stylus FE-290 7MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Black)just came out with theirs at about the same price so I'm going to try that one.

Very good wide-angle digicam effort from Samsung3
I wish more attention would be given to the still relatively few digicams that have true wide-angle lenses. This is a much better effort from Samsung on a wide-angle zoom digicam. I previously had the A55W, which had severe limitations and useability issues. I also have the 6-megapixel Panasonic FX01, an excellent wide-angle digicam, which does have more noticeable image noise than this Samsung but still outshines it in some areas.
The Samsung has a very nice build feel and is much faster than the A55W overall. The A55W had a terrible long preflash delay for all flash shots that could not be turned off. The L74 Wide is much speeder in this regard, though I suspect face detection slows the autofocus time a bit, and if you turn on red-eye reduction while shooting, it adds processing time after the photo is taken (as does the ASR shake-reduction feature, since the antishake is done in post-processing in camera). The movie mode allows for very long shoot time, and does allow zooming while recording, but the sound is muted during the actual zooming of the lens, so this will introduce brief passages of complete silence into the video any time you zoom.
The touch screen works reasonably well and is probably no more fiddly than some multi-button setups.
I wish there were an external charger for the battery so it wouldn't have to charge in camera, which would make carrying an extra battery more convenient.
Picture quality overall (at maximum size and jpg quality) is very good, still looking like a small-sensor digicam as opposed to a DSLR or larger-sensor camera, but noise is well controlled in most Auto ISO situations. Flash exposures are also well exposed and don't suffer from overexposure with close subjects.
The World Tour Guide function is quite a gimmick but fun to play with, though I have found a quirk where it only works if you remove the SD card from the camera. It seems the camera will only recognize one "disk" at a time, so if an SD card is in the camera, the World Tour Guide program will start, but the buttons for countries are inactive. If I remove the SD card, the camera will use the internal memory for photos and the World Tour Guide will then work. Samsung did not respond to my customer-service e-mail. I assume a firmware upgrade/fix would resolve this. Any hints from anyone who has used the camera?

    need the remote badly4
I use this camera for Paragliding and shoot pics back at customers who go tandem with me. So the remote is a key accessory for me. however, it is not available yet. if anyone has an idea of how to obtain one of these remotes please let me know, the camera is really quite challenging without the remote. it would be very nice if you could "set" remote and not go back to the default every time its powered off.
The wide angle is great, as is the bottomless video function.
please let me know about the remote, thanks... Drew

1/2.7" 3.2 Megapixel Effective Super HAD CCD
Super HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD's provide excellent image quality by allowing more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. QXGA (2048 x 1536) image size with its high resolution CCD, the DSC-P8 captures in 4 different image sizes, with Fine or Standard JPEG compression.

    3X Optical Zoom Lens
To help frame your shots for better digital pictures. Optical Zoom helps you bring distant subjects closer & pull back for wide shots.

0 - 3.2X Smart Zoom (at VGA Size)
Smart Zoom intelligently uses the full CCD to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size--thus avoiding the image degradation of Digital Zooms.

    3 Area Multi-Point Auto Focus
Evaluating 3 separate focus areas of the frame, Multi-Point AF can intelligently focus on the subject and avoid mistakenly focusing on the background. To maintain accurate focus lock with fast moving subjects, Continuous AF keeps focusing until the moment of exposure.

Good basic camera, especially for the younger set4
I wanted to get my pre-teen daughter a digital camera as a gift, so I didn't want anything complex, and I didn't want to spend a lot of money.

I am very familiar with Canon cameras, so my natural tendency was to go for another Canon. After some research, I settled on the PowerShot A460.

I think it was a good choice, as it takes good quality photos in the auto mode, has a decent zoom range, and seems to have a durable construction that should last her a long time. While it's not tiny, its small size means that she can carry it around without a case.

You're going to need a memory card, and I would recommend at least a 2GB card to take a decent amount of photos before needing to empty it, but 4GB would probably be the best for most people.

This is a camera without a lot of complicated controls for those with basic to mid-level snapshot needs. To get more, you're going to have to pay more, but that's the nice thing about Canon's line of cameras; there is a model out there for just about every need.

    Definitely recommended!

    Customer Reviews

    Extremely impressive pocket camera5
I am *extremely* impressed by this little Leica.

This will be a rather short review since this camera model is already, like, 300 years old in dog years.

I was able to pick a new one up for less than [...] on the internets from someone who clearly didn't know what they were parting with. When I inquired into why the party was selling she only told me that her husband needed something newer.

I have owned and used dozens of cameras (Leica, Nikon, Canon, Rollie, Mamiya) in my career.

The C-LUX 2 is an amazing unit in terms of color authenticity, image quality, zoom quality, sensitivity, precision, workmanship, and most of all: usability and convenience.

I cannot stress how perfect the menu system is on this camera. It's perfect and the controls are precise, accurate, and delightful to use.

Convenience means that having this camera in your pocket you will never miss a great shot no matter where you are. Yes it really is that good. With controls from scene mode to nearly manual you have precise control of your pictures. There is no reason you cannot achieve a National Geo picture with this camera.

When the C-LUX 2 debuted at [.........] it was really a Euro-jet-setting no-show. Now that you can find this gem below [....] it is a must have.

5 stars based on current market conditions and availability in late 2008. Good luck finding a mint unit. If you are indefatigable you will find no better camera in the same class at any price.

    Excitment turns to "meh".3
I was hoping to find something different. Something better than the rest. Sometimes you just don't feel like the usual selection is good enough. I already had a Canon, everyone and their brother had a Nikon.
I was thinking about the slim line Casio, but who wants to buy a Casio?
So one late night / early morning I found this Leica. It looked different than the Canon/Nikon/Casio/Olympus and plus it had that little red badge on the front. I had to have it.
I found a local dealer on the Leica website and the next day I bought it for the same price as Amazon.
BTW, I knew there was a Panasonic version for half the price. I bought into the cosmetic of the Leica, the story, and that little red badge.
Supposedly this model has different firmware than the Panasonic which gives your JPEG files a color palette similar to classic Leica cameras.
It does not shoot in RAW.

    Design

The look of this camera is gorgeous. It is very understated but an instant classic design. The build quality is also very good. It doesn't attract unwanted attention but once you put your hands on it you know it is a well built product.

    Ease Of Use

The button layout is nice. It is simple and clean with access to shortcuts for flash, exposure, self timer, and review.
Choosing auto settings or manual mode is easy and the icons make sense.
I wish there were shortcuts for shutter speed and ISO settings. To access those you have to get into the menu which is time consuming and cumbersome. PS most cameras are like that though.

    Ergonomics

It is so small and thin that it is kind of hard to hold steadily. Definitely use the wrist strap because it has slipped out of my hands a few times.

    Picture Quality

This is very subjective. With good lighting I love the way my pictures turn out. Colors are very natural and not over saturated at all. It is very hard to get "tac sharp" shots with it but I don't think that is the point of a point and shoot.
With average or difficult lighting this point and shoot really struggles. I hate using high ISO settings because anything over 400 has a lot of noise of this camera. The flash blows out the picture if you are less then 6 feet away. It isn't powerful enough in a dim room if you are more then 8 feet away. There are no controls to dial down the flash. To get a good picture with or without flash you spend a lot of time changing exposure, ISO, and shutter speed. There is a +/- 2 exposure control but the shutter speed can only be set to a maximum of 1 second in manual mode. ISO can be set from 100-1250 but again anything over 400 has a lot of noise. Using "simple mode" usually jacks up the ISO settings in dark rooms or uses the flash which is useless most of the time. You can get a good shot in a dark room or outdoors but it will take some time to set it up.

    Extra

Includes a copy of Photoshop Elements which is a fun program to add effects to your photos.

    Overall

If you are thinking about this for outdoor day trips to the beach or mountains then this might be a good choice for you. If you want something to take to parties and nights out with your friends then you need to find something with better low light performance and a smarter auto mode. I don't regret buying it but it is not all that I hoped for considering Leica's reputation and premium price.

    Uh oh3
I got this camera new and within the first day of use an issue came up. The mechanism to cover/uncover the lens was faulty. When I turn the camera the lens come out but remains covered. Sometimes it just opens halfway. I don't know if other owners have experienced the same problems, but considering how delicate is this mechanism, I imagine is a problem with the model in general. The area around the lens scratches easily, so consider it a warning if you're going to put this camera in your pocket. I wouldn't blame you because it's the perfect pocket size, but it's also a pricey camera. I'm not crazy about picture quality but could be because I have a far superior digital SLR. There's some (barely noticeable) distortion in the images which I attribute to lens size.

    From the Manufacturer
Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, today releases the PowerShot range-opening 3.2-megapixel PowerShot A410. Replacing the popular PowerShot A400, the PowerShot A410 has a bold new design and incorporates improved operability and performance through DIGIC II processing, and a 3.2x optical zoom with maximum aperture of f2.8-f5.1. It is housed in a smaller, more compact and robust body.

Featuring 5-point AiAF auto focus and a range of shooting modes, the A410's ease of use makes it the ideal camera for those making the change to digital.

    DIGIC II power
In a leap up from the PowerShot A400, the PowerShot A410 now includes Canon's renowned DIGIC II processing--the same technology found in Canon's EOS-1 professional range digital SLR cameras. The DIGIC II processor integrates all image processing algorithms onto a single chip to deliver fast write times, minimal shutter lag, optimal image definition and consistently precise and natural color reproduction. Camera start up and response times for image review are significantly improved. Introduction of DIGIC II also accounts for an up to 40% improvement in auto focus times, and smooth continuous shooting at a highly impressive 2.5 frames per second.

    Simply better
While being smaller and more robust, the A410 has a longer optical zoom of 3.2 x (41-131mm equivalent) allowing the user extra reach. The increased maximum aperture provides more options when shooting in low light. 5-point AiAF auto focus analyses the composition of the shot and focuses the camera accordingly, keeping even off-center subjects sharply in focus. Super Macro mode allows focus on subjects as close as 1.5 centimeters from the lens.

Users can take photographs using the optical viewfinder or the 1.5-inch LCD monitor. The monitor is adjustable up to 15 levels of brightness, and the user interface has been improved to make the camera even more simple to use. 22 language settings can be displayed.

To take full advantage of the camera's zoom range, the A410's flash has been repositioned, ensuring that there are no dark shadows in images when they are recorded with the lens fully extended. The flash covers a range of up to 3 meters.

    Camera modes
The A410 has 14 shooting modes to select from, including 8 pre-set Special Scene modes to help achieve great results in tricky lighting conditions. These modes include Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids and Pets, Indoor, Foliage, Beach, Snow, and Fireworks. To assist photographers with composition, a gridline display can be selected, which helps with framing shots and keeping horizons level. The addition of My Colors allows the operator to use enhanced, in-camera digital effects, such as Color Swap, while shooting. Previously, this level of image enhancement was only possible after downloading to a PC, and using specialised software.

The A410 also allows users to capture high quality movie clips. It supports VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA (320 x 240) quality at 10 and 20 frames per second respectively. Up to 3 minutes of footage can be captured. A Compact Mode is provided for producing clips suitable for e-mail without the problem of unwieldy file sizes.

    Direct printing
At 3.2 megapixels, the A410 can print photo quality images up to A4 size. When used in combination with Canon's new Compact Photo Printer Selphy CP510 and Canon's Ink and Paper Set (KP-108IP), prints can be produced very inexpensively. Printing via Selphy CP Compact Photo Printers also allows the user to print handy ID Photo prints and movie prints.

When connected to the latest range of PictBridge compatible PIXMA printers, image enhancement is possible with functions including Noise Reduction and Vivid Photo as well as the new Face Brightener feature.

Printing of images without having to connect to a PC is also made simpler via the Print/Share button.

    Comprehensive software
The A410 comes bundled with the following Canon software:

  • ZoomBrowser EX 5.5, PhotoRecord 2.2 (Windows), ImageBrowser 5.5 (Macintosh): For easy image download, storage and retrieval, as well as management of image layout and printing.
  • PhotoStitch 3.1: Creates stunning panoramas and can be used with Windows and Macintosh.
  • PhotoStudio: The photo manipulation software by ArcSoft.

Purchasers of the A410 are eligible for membership of Canon iMAGE Gateway , where they can upload images and customise their camera settings.

The bundled software supports Windows 98 (SE), ME, 2000 (SP4), XP (SP1/3) and Macintosh OS X v10.2-v10.3. The A410 supports PTP for driverless transfer to supported Windows XP or Macintosh OS X.

    What's in the box
PowerShot A410 body, two AA-size Alkaline batteries, 16 MB MultiMediaCard MMC-16M, wrist strap WS-800, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM, USB interface cable IFC-400PCU

    3 Year Old Camera; Review5
I've had this camera for 3 years now. I use AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries. Never a problem with the camera or the batteries (I got the Sony brand that comes with the charger). You'll probably need to buy batteries, a larger memory card, and perhaps a case. This camera will not take SD cards that are "HC" (high capacity). Those cards are usually 4GB and higher.

Picture resolutions this camera can capture:
    2048 x 1536
    1600 x 1200
    1024 x 768
    640 x 480

There are 3 Modes you can enable, 1) Superfine, 2) Fine, and 3) Normal. These settings change the JPEG compression. Superfine has little to no compression. And Normal will have the most compression. If you lower the setting to "Normal", you can decrease the file sizes and fit more pictures on your SD card and take more pictures.

This camera will show you the amount of pictures you can take at a particular setting. For example, with a 512MB SD card, at the highest resolution of 2048x1536 and set at "Superfine", it will take 302 pictures. At 2048x1536, and set at "Normal" it will take 1066 pictures. If you have used up half your card disk space, it will account for that and display the amount of pictures you can take.

It can capture movies/videos. They will not have sound though. Below are the dimensions:
    640 x 480 at 10 FPS
    320 x 240 at 20 FPS
    FPS = Frames Per Second

The 320x240 videos look good and run a lot smoother because of the higher frames per second.

Also has common features like Macro, Supermacro, indoor/outdoor settings, etc.

I'll never buy another digital camera till this one breaks down. I use to think the megapixels of the camera meant it would take better pictures. However, that is incorrect. That only means it will take higher resolution pictures, which doesn't necessarily mean better pictures. If you do a lot of printing or print larger than 8.5 x 11, then megapixels would matter. I stopped caring about that since I rather have a camera just take quality pictures. If I were printing posters or something, I'd care.

It is fairly simply to use.

    Just Right5
I got this camera in 2005 and it is now 2008 and it has been everywhere with me! We've gone skiing, went to Niagara falls (this camera survived maid of the mist boat ride), several zoos, conventions, graduations, microbiology laboratory ect. This thing has stayed working in all sorts of weather after much tumbling around in my handbag. I take it to school and work every day. I've never had any problems with it - ever. The menus and functions are user-friendly. The flash is just right (not harsh) and never makes my face look shiny like so many other cameras do. The zoom is awesome and the self-timer can be custom set in many ways!

Tip: use rechargeable batteries rather than regular. This camera went through my AAs very quickly during long events (half day and full day events called for at least one battery change). Now, with the $20 rechargeable 2500mAh batteries, I only run out of power every few months no matter how many or long my photo-ops last! It's been great!

One question, though. Why is there a video feature if the camera cannot record audio (sound)??? I never use the video feature because of this.

This camera takes great pictures, is durable, and is my best friend. Thank you Canon!

    Excellent entry camera4
More than excellent image quality for recreational use. I used it on my trips and gotten very satisfactory results, but blurry and grainy in most night shots, like most cameras. Colors become more vivid than real life. Printouts made w/ ip1500 inkjet is good but slightly grainier than film. Navigation is fast and super easy. Features I find useful: Adjustable gamma, brightness, several fun color tweaks, selectable light tones, macro/super macro, auto/manual flash, rapid shots, 5/10sec timer, panorama, LCD screen on/off, tripod mount, auto standby.

The deal breakers: If priced at $100 and over, I'd spend 50 more for new models like one with higher resolution, lithium battery, and a flatter profile (not for looks, but for the placement of the trigger). Picture can be grainy even in warmly lit living rooms, but that's a problem w/ all camera even w/ some SLRs. Just use flash(but drains power to ~15 shots).

    Lovely camera for kids3
this is lively camera for kids , but the screen is too small , and the resolution of the screen is really bad , but my daughter love it ..

    Absolutely, positively garbage!1
I purchased this camera for my 7-year-old Daughter. It looks like a cute little camera but the pictures that it takes are horrible. They are so blurry and so dark that you can hardly see anything. The camera doesn't have any type of flash and it is badly needed. We even tried taking pictures in very bright light and the pictures still look like they were taken outside at midnight without a flash. I don't leave 1 star reviews very often but I feel this camera is very deserving of it.

    Not worth it2
Picture quality is horrible and that's with decent light. Forget anything darker than a very bright room.
The overlay thing can be kind of fun for the kids but the almost indistinguishable photo part will keep it from lasting.
It's fairly sturdy, more than a standard camera anyway.
You're better off getting a used 1 or 2 megapixel camera at the same price.

For some reason I can't give this thing less than 2 stars. It really only gets a 1 from me.

I purchased this item as a gift and have not had any complaints. I believe the recipient of this gift is satisfied and I know he has used it frequently.

Kodak Easy Share C633 6.1 MP Digital Camera1
This camera is not worth what it sells for. I got it for a Christmas gift with the docking station only 2 years ago, and it's shot. The first thing that I noticed with the camera is the shutter got stuck, 1/4 to 1/2 way open, not good. Had to pry it open manually. Next, the camera sucked batteries like there was no tomorrow, sort of like the big oil execs. sucked our money when gas was nearly $5.00 a gallon. The 3rd, and final thing that happened to the camera is the screen went out. How can you take pictures if you don't have any screen? Junk, Junk, Junk, probably made in China with lead too....

    I hate this camera2
This is the worst camera I ever used. I am so disappointed with it. The pictures are not that great. Never take a closeup with this camera, unless you like blurry pictures (even when you use the setting for close pictures) The lighting conditions have to be perfect to get a good picture off this camera - i.e. a bright sunny day.. otherwise expect to be disappointed. And indoor photos...forget it... and buy LOTS of batteries... this thing eats them like crazy!

    piece of junk1
I bought this camera less than six months ago, (from Best Buy, not in a big hurry to pay a restock fee) and I've already had to replace the battery twice and the charger once.

When it "worked" it was fine, but now HP's customer services answer to the fact the charger isn't charging the new battery is to buy a new battery.

It's ridiculous to have to buy a new battery for every day I use the camera. (which happened when I took it on vacation to Georgia. The battery died in one day.)

My recommendation? DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK. One of my family members works for HP and she recommends the same thing. I wish I would have known before I threw my money away on this item. I am now looking for a new digital camera and a friend has suggested Nikon. (he's a professional photographer, so I'm going to take his recommendation.)

I'm so disappointed in this product and more disappointed in the lack of customer service. Never again will I buy an HP product.

    HP R967 Digital Camera5
I have a preference for HP Products and had been happy with my original HP photosmart 635 bought Nov-2003. Then, in Nov-2005, I upgraded to an HP photosmart R817 after seeing the awesome photos taken by a tour mate on our African Safari to Kenya, and simply LOVED it and the photos I took with it -- even bought one that Xmas for a gr-niece, who had taken a Photography class and admired mine! Then in Oct-2007, while traveling in Germany, I dropped the camera while touring a monastery in Corvey, and could no longer take outdoor photos... only inside with/without flash!! So, after finding that this version was no longer available, I opted to try the R967, since it was the closest to the 40X total zoom of the R817 and used the same type battery, instead of AAs; R967 has 30X total zoom. I'm still working to get all the features down, but I like it 'almost' as well as the R617!! I can highly recommend it to other amateur photographers!

    Clyde's hp R9675
HP Photosmart R967 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
I've several digital cameras including hp 945. Hp has a way to go on service. I bought this camera becuase I like it's features and easy to use menu. The price is excellent
for this much camera. I bought an extra battery and it charges in the camera.
I would buy this product again.
I would reccomend HP R967 to friends.

(Optical Image Stabilizer), and Intelligent ISO control. The DMC-FX50 also newly incorporates a 3-inch large LCD whereas the DMC-FX07 pursues further compactness with a 2.5-inch LCD.

Inheriting the superior 28mm Leica DC lens in a compact body from its predecessor, the DMC-FX50 camera allows users to enjoy the benefits of a wide-angle lens when shooting indoor group portraits, expansive landscapes, or architectural scenes.

To fight against the major cause of blurred images, Panasonic invented the Mega O.I.S. system, taking advantage of its superior lens technology to compensate for handshake. In addition, to also compensate for the other major cause of blurred images--movement of the subject--the FX50 camera is also equipped with the world's first Intelligent ISO Control (hereafter I.I.C.) and a maximum ISO of 1250, for high-sensitivity recording at full resolution within the advanced image processing LSI Venus Engine III. When set to the I.I.C., the Venus Engine III detects the subject's movement and adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light condition automatically. Panasonic's excellent image stabilization system allows users to take clear, crisp images in any situation, leaving everything to the camera.

Taking advantage of the newly incorporated 3-inch large LCD, the DMC-FX50 allows dual image playback to see and compare any two images at a time. It is also possible to select 9 sequential frames from a captured motion image file and display them as thumbnails which can then even be saved as still images. Furthermore, a print mode has been added to the mode dial to allow users to connect the camera to a Pictbridge-corresponding printer via an included USB cable.

When shooting indoor group portraits, sometimes the room is not large enough to allow the photographer to get everyone in the frame, or the light is insufficient, forcing the photographer to use a flash. However the winning combination of 28mm Leica DC lens and the Intelligent Image stabilizer enable every type of user to take ideal beautiful images with everyone in the frame and without having to use the flash which would spoil the ambience of the picture.

The DMC-FX50 is available in silver and black, with a specially textured finish. The new Lumix DMC-FX50 is a beautifully designed and feature-packed digital camera, ideal for recording and preserving all those precious moments that life gives.

28mm Wide-Angle 3.6x Optical Zoom f2.8 Leica DC Lens in a Compact Body
The 7.2-megapixel Lumix DMC-FX50 camera has a 28mm (35mm equivalent) wide-angle 3.6x optical zoom f2.8 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens housed in a compact and slim body, achieved thanks to the incorporation of an EA (Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical) lens. This wide-angle lens enables easy capture of groups of people, architectural structures, and scenery with dynamic width and a rich perspective. The lens unit, comprised of a Leica DC lens of seven elements in six groups, incorporates four aspherical lenses to generate high optical performance while preserving the compactness of the unit. The zoom ratio can be extended up to 5.5x in 3-megapixel resolution mode thanks to the Extended Optical Zoom function, which gives extra magnification (and minimal image deterioration) by intentionally using the center part of the CCD.

More than Mega O.I.S., Lumix's Image Stabilizing System Evolves Further
Taking advantage of its superior lens technology, Panasonic invented the Mega O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer) system to fight against the major cause of blurred images. It compensates for handshake and is now featured on the entire Lumix range. Every slight hand-shake movement is detected accurately with the sampling frequency of 4,000 times per second and is compensated for, rendering clear, sharp images. In addition, movement of the subject, the other major cause of blurred images, is suppressed by the advanced image processing LSI Venus Engine III with the Intelligent ISO Control (hereafter I.I.C.) and high-sensitivity recording capabilities with a maximum ISO of 1250. The world's first incorporation of this I.I.C. allows the automatic adjustment of the suitable ISO setting and shutter speed that best suits the situation by analyzing the speed of subject movement. If the subject is moving, the ISO setting automatically rises to allow a higher shutter speed. On the other hand, if the subject is still and no movement is detected, you can take beautiful natural images with a low ISO setting.

High Picture Quality, Rapid Image Processing with the Venus Engine III
The DMC-FX50/FX07 camera uses the Venus Engine III to realize high sensitivity recording at a maximum ISO of 1250 at full resolution. The noise-reduction system is greatly improved by removing noise at the processing stages in series. With its multi-task image processing capability, the Venus Engine III boasts outstanding response time with a shutter release time lag of as few as 0.005 seconds and a shutter interval of 0.5 seconds. Together with the fast startup time of approximately 1.3 seconds, the quick response of DMC-FX50/FX07 enable easy capture of those spur-of-the-moment shots. In the burst shooting mode, it is possible to shoot at three frames per second in full resolution for a maximum of eight images in standard mode or six images in fine mode. The DMC-FX50/FX07 cameras also allow unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the SD/SDHC memory card. (The speed of the consecutive shooting varies depending on the memory card.)

Despite the large, bright LCD, the DMC-FX50/FX07 camera achieves long battery life to shoot approximately 300 pictures (CIPA) on a single charge thanks to the energy-efficient Venus Engine III.

Advanced 3.0-Inch LCD for Easy Shooting and Playback
The FX50 newly incorporates an easy-to-see 3.0-inch 230K high-resolution LCD. The large LCD enables dual-image playback to display any two images vertically in the LCD and compare them, as well as the nine-frame cutouts from a motion image. Also, the pixel-mixed readout method performed by the CCD automatically increases the brightness level of the live image on the LCD, which greatly facilitates shooting in low-light situations. With the help of the Power LCD function, which boosts the backlighting of the LCD by 40%, even shooting in bright outdoor situations is no longer a problem. The High Angle mode makes the display extremely easy to view from low angles, for example, when holding the camera up high to take pictures over a crowd. It can be accessed easily and quickly by using the dedicated button.

Clear, Bright, Wide VGA Motion-Image Recording for Viewing on Wide-Screen TV
In addition to standard VGA (640 x 480) motion image recording at 30 frames per second (fps), the DMC-FX50 cameras can also record stunning full-size movies in wide-aspect VGA (848 x 480) at 30 fps. Shooting is one thing but viewing is another, and users will be suitably impressed by the 16:9 moving image when it is displayed on a wide-screen TV. The brightness level of these motion images is also enhanced as a result of the pixel-mixed readout method performed by the CCD.

Users may also select and display nine sequential frames from a motion image in thumbnail format, enabling you to see individual frames of a golf swing, for example.

    Unimpeded High-Speed Autofocus
The various autofocus (AF) mode can be selected according to the shooting environment and the position of the subject: 9-point, 3-point high speed, 1-point high-speed, 1-point normal-speed, and spot. In the 1-point normal speed AF, the AF time is reduced by one third of the time compared to the predecessor, to provide a quick and smooth AF without screen-freeze. The inclusion of an AF assist lamp provides further assistance in low-light situations when focusing is difficult. The result is stress-free photography with never a moment missed.

A Variety of Scene Modes and Other Features to Enrich Your Photography
An even greater variety of scene modes are included--17 in total, to assist you in a wide range of photographic situations. The newly incorporated Beach mode is perfect for shooting in strong sunlight and the Aerial mode enhances shots taken through the windows of an airplane. High Sensitivity mode, made possible by the pixel-mixed readout method by the CCD, is ideal for shooting moving subjects clearly without blurring at a sensitivity as high as ISO 3200. (Resolution significantly decreases in high sensitivity mode.)

On the other hand, in the Simple mode, almost all adjustments can be automatically set--even the backlight compensation--allowing even entry-level users to take beautiful images easily.

An additional improvement is the addition of a print mode onto the mode dial for the FX50 so that users can make prints by just connecting the camera to a Pictbridge-compatible printer via an included USB cable.

The FX50 is compatible with an optional marine case (not included--must be purchased separately) with which users can shoot underwater while scuba diving, etc. The camera also includes a World Time Setting, which allows users to set the time and date of 74 locations across the world.

    Very pleased4
Great camera for my teenage daughter. She wanted the panasonic lumix after seeing the quality of pics I get from my lumix. She and I are very pleased.

    nice camera5
it is a very nice camera. i have been use it for a year
i love the quality of the photos and my friends love this camera too.
the only defect for the camera is: it is little be to thick
but it has a big scream, and a very nice lens.

    PERFECT CAMERA FOR ME5
Purchased this camera in 2006 from Amazon after previously owing mostly Nikon and one Canon camera. I have used it constantly since. It is the perfect camera for one like me - impatient, visually impaired and critically demanding. I purchased the camera for the display after seeing someone using one like it but smaller. My interests are taking great memory photos indoors and outdoors and this camera has been excellent. Although I have a movie camera, this one serves perfectly for short clips for our website.

    good for outdoor shots2
This is a great little camera if you do a lot of outdoor photo shoots of still objects. I have 3 small children, and it doesn't work too well for my photo needs. I take lots of indoor pictures which most of the time turn out pretty dark unless I have it super bright in my house, but that isn't very often. I tried to take pictures at my son's kindergarten graduation in his classroom, but it was too dark to get even one shot. I had to get video of him to be able to see him at all. Not so great for kids in motion either, they are blurry.

Video option is great though. I guess I use this option most on my camera. I have had this one about a year, and I am going for a canon with IS (image stabalization) now. I will retire this camera to my husband.

    Lens Brakes easily1
this camera worked well, until the lens stopped working one day. now it just makes a grinding noise. from looking online, this is a common problem. the outside is metal, but the gears inside are just soft plastic.

Poor Design and Even Poorer Customer Service1
LOVED this camera until it broke one year later. I mean it completely broke. It's dead. The battery power died during a photo shoot and killed the camera. Now it won't even turn on. See my post in the forum on this page for more info. The short of it all is, do NOT buy Kodak. My GF has a Canon Elph and it's far more amazing than anything Kodak makes. Plus if you ever have to deal with Kodak's customer service...well, let's hope you never have to.

    From the Manufacturer
The 10-megapixel NV10 features the distinctive styling of the NV Series including an innovative touch pad Graphical User Interface (GUI), a sleek, brushed black aluminum body, and a compact design. The NV10, measuring just .7-inches thick, includes a Schneider 3x optical zoom lens (35-105mm equivalent), a 5x digital zoom, and a large, 2.5-inch color LCD display.

The NV10, a 10-megapixel model, joins the NV Series of digital still cameras featuring unique, slim designs with sleek bodies in brushed black, stainless steel and a trademark Samsung blue ring located around the lens of each model. This premium line was developed after two years of extensive market research, and as a result, feature a revolutionary, easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI) that allows users to easily toggle through menu functions using a convenient touch pad located along the LCD on the back of the camera, instead of the traditional dial located at the top of the camera. For outstanding image quality, the NV10 features legendary Schneider optics.

The NV10 is equipped with Samsung's state-of-the-art Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR) technology to combat hand shake. The ASR function provides enhanced image clarity by electronically compensating for excess hand shake and improving color in environments lacking sufficient lighting where the use of the flash is not desirable.

    Customer Reviews

    MY SAMSUNG NV 105
I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS CAMEERA. IT IS SMALL AND TAKES VERY SHARP PICTURES. ANTI SHAKE WORKS GREAT. HAVE NOT HAD ANY DIFFICULITIES USING ALL THE FEATURES OF THIS CAMERA.

    OK camera, terrible customer support1
The camera itself is OK, no complaints. However at some point it was damaged and sent to Samsung for repair. That turned out to be a naightmarish experience. I don't recommend buying a Sumsung camera because if you ever need it serviced, you will have to deal with the most incompetent bureaucrocy that will loose your camera and will keep you on phone for hours inventing various excuses of why the camera is lost. For closest approximation of the Samsung customer service read Frantz Kafka's "Trail". The book will cost you less than the camera here on Amazon, but the impressions will be the same.

Convenient camera (but user manual is a little vague)4
I have a Nikon D80 Digital SLR and an older Sony DSC-V1 digital camera. But I wanted a smaller camera that I could easily carry around everywhere and use at any time.

I tried the Canon Elph, the Nikon Coolpix, and others in a local camera store. But they were either too slippery to hold, or too big/heavy, or lacked a decent wide angle, or didn't support decent manual modes. Then I tried the NV10. WOW!

    SMART TOUCH
The camera manual is a little vague about this. Swipe-and-pause (not press) from one button to its neighbor scrolls pictures one-by-one. Swipe-and-pause across more buttons scrolls faster through multiple pictures. To keep scrolling without swiping over and over, swipe-and-pause but end on the very last button on the left, or on the second-to-last button on the right.

The Zoom button lets you zoom out to view multiple thumbnails in a photo album view (swipe-and-pause to scroll left/right/up/down) and then zoom in for the full view of a selected picture.

    SIZE/GRIP
This camera is skinny! I have (previously) uploaded a picture to Amazon showing the camera with a dime for comparison.

It has a decent grip, and it's slightly longer than most of the other comparable cameras I tried. But you could try it in a store to decide for yourself.

    PICTURE QUALITY
It only supports JPG (no TIFF or RAW formats). By default, it's set on JPG Medium, but you can set it to JPG Fine.

To give you a sense of the colors, the grain, issues with the image at the corners, low-light handling, and shake reduction (or not), I have previously uploaded an uncropped picture of some jelly fish (at an aquarium), taken handheld with no flash in Automatic mode. The only light was from the soft/dim light inside the tanks. The room was dark because these jellies don't tolerate light well.

    MANUAL SETTINGS
You usually only get two F stop choices available at any time. (F2.8 and F7.1 commonly appear, but the these choices change when you zoom.)

    SHAKE REDUCTION
The ASR is digital, not optical. So, it's not the same as having a vibration reduction lens. (Also, the manual indicates that you need to enter a special shooting mode to get the ASR. So, apparently you don't get ASR most of the time.)

    SD CARD
The manual guarantees compatibility with 1GB max. I haven't tried a 2GB card yet.

The camera also has 20MB of internal memory built in, so you can actually take a couple of pictures even *before* you buy a card (or after you fill up a card).

    REMOTE
There's a remote available in certain countries, but I have yet to see it available (by itself, at least) in the US.

    BATTERY LIFE
Once you get past the newbie need to use up battery life while fiddling with learning to use the camera, it doesn't seem too bad. The batteries are very small (as shown in my uploaded picture), so it's easy to carry a couple of extras.

    ZOOM
The 3X optical zoom is OK. The newer Samsung NV11 has a 5x optical zoom (but maybe Samsung traded that for something that I would miss). The NV7 has a 7X optical zoom (but it's a bigger camera).

I've had the NV10 for nearly a year now, and I'm pleased with it.

Canon PowerShot SD790IS Features and Highlights
    1x zoom/3x zoom
Advanced 10-megapixel Digital ELPH with 3x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH offers impressive core technologies. The 10.0-megapixel CCD gives you extraordinary flexibility in cropping and enlarging: the detail and resolution are so fine that you can take any part of an image and enlarge it with confidence. The 3x optical zoom can more than handle your everyday shooting. Canon’s exclusive Optical Image Stabilizer automatically detects and cancels camera shake, ensuring that your images are crisp and blur-free throughout the zoom range.

Motion Detection Technology automatically detects subject movement and optimizes exposure control to reduce blur Life doesn’t stand still for picture-taking. That’s why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether you’re shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child’s soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you’ve got the picture you intended.

With Canon's Face Detection WB (right), skin tones are not affected by overall lighting
Improved Face Detection Technology sets the focus, exposure, flash and white balance automatically Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new SD790 IS Digital ELPH. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. But the SD790 IS Digital ELPH adds more: Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets the SD790 IS Digital ELPH user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology.

And with 19 Shooting Modes including 12 Special Scene Modes, you’re ready for whatever shot comes your way.

Edgy, stylish design combined with a cool new button configuration for great operability It’s all about edge with the PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH. Sculptured angles not only ratchet up this Digital ELPH’s "look at me" quotient, but add an extra degree of control for superior handling. Gleaming cut surfaces emphasize the camera’s slim style. A cutting-edge control dial makes accessing functions and operations easier than ever. Large, flat buttons in an intuitive configuration are uniquely attractive and fun to use.

DIGIC III Image Processor for superior image quality and improved functionality With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What’s more, DIGIC III enables Canon’s Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the SD790 IS Digital ELPH's menu.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
    1) The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
    2) The SD790 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
    3) The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH also features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

Print/Share Button for easy direct printing and downloading The PowerShot SD790 IS Digital ELPH's Print/Share button makes direct printing easier than ever. Simply connect the SD790 IS Digital ELPH to a Canon PIXMA photo printer or SELPHY compact photo printer or any PictBridge compatible photo printer, press the lighted Print/Share button and print! Also use the Print/Share button to transfer images to a computer (Windows and Macintosh).

Print your own ID photos in up to 28 different sizes or use the Movie Print function to output multiple stills from a recorded movie on a single sheet with a Canon SELPHY compact photo printer.

Great overall point & shoot digital camear5
Clear photos, good video function, really good macro photos. Could perhaps use some wind noise cancellation for the mic and improved clarity when zooming in video mode. I also found it to have good battery life. Much better than the (albeit old) Sony DSC-T1 I replaced with this camera.

    Great camera5
I love my new camera!! I took it on my trip and I was able to take so many great pictures. Very fast shipping!!

Depends what you're using it for3

How one rates this camera will depend on what they're using it for, I think.

    Pros:

It's good for a casual photographer - a professional will obviously be looking into more expensive models. If you have many events to document, or simply enjoy taking pictures of the things around you, you likely won't be disappointed in this camera.

I myself enjoy taking pictures, mostly for art reference, but I do not fancy myself a photographer by any means. I want to be able to point and shoot, and this camera handles that well. If you know what you're doing, though, you can tinker with the settings and change things around to suit your needs.

    Cons:

My problem with this camera was the difference between what I saw on the LCD screen and what I saw once the picture was taken. The colors were often drastically different in moderate to low lighting, and since every good picture is not out in broad daylight and there are some really beautiful colors at sunset, I was kind of peeved. Odd lighting seemed to confuse the camera, and the pictures wouldn't turn out looking like what you yourself were staring at.

Also, when taking pictures of various artwork (I was hoping to get away with taking pictures instead of having to buy a big ol' scanner), whether I stood the thing on a tripod or used macro settings... nothing would get the pictures of the art to come out crisp and clean. They were always just a bit blurry.

    Overall:

For the price, you can't beat this camera. As long as you're not trying to get amazing, perfect pictures out of it - as long as you have the right expectations - you won't be disappointed. It's not for me, as I need something more precise for what I use it for, but everyone who just wants something to tote along with them on vacations ought to give it a try.
